{WE EAT AND DRINK WHILE TOMORROW THEY DIE}
Harper stuck her tongue out at Nathaniel. She looked like she was about nine years old. She had to keep herself like that fr her brother. It was odd. She kept in touch with the nine year old inside of her so that her brother wouldn't think she was boring. He told her once before that he liked being with Harper more than their parents because they were old and boring. So she was obligated to be fun one. As big sister, it was sort of her job, and she took it on with grace and dignity. Well, as much grace and dignity as she could retain acting like she was half her age. But she couldn't say that it was terrible. She loved her little brother. Tyler was a cute kid, and it seemed like the friends that had met him liked him as well. He had only met a few of her friends, but they all seemed to like him. She was happy. The last thing she needed was for her friends to hate her brother or vice versa. One of her brother’s favorites was Alex Vane. She didn’t quite know why, but Tyler was attached to him when he came to visit. Not that it mattered why. What matteredwas that they liked each other. And that was a huge plus.
Yes, Harper had played Quidditch. And she was good at it in her day. She had never been good enough to be deemed as captain, but she had managed to keep herself on the team for a while. Well, she tried out in her fourth year and stayed on the team until she was done with school. So she must've been good at it. Well, good to a degree. She playe chaser on the team, so she had to have good reflexes. She could never play beater. She had a terrible arm, and she had bad eyes, so seeker was out of the question. And she just wasn't a good keeper. She had tried too. But she wasn't nearly as good at Quidditch as she was soccer. She was a beast at soccer. She had picked it up as a kid, and loved playing. Tyler was on his school team or something, so whenever they saw each other, she would play with him for a while. It was something she could do with her whle family, actually. What was left of her family anyway- and that meant her brother, her dad and his girlfriend-slash-fiancee. Mindy and her dad had been dating for years, so whatever. They were pretty much married. Mindy was actually better at soccer than her dad was, so they would play guys against girls more often than not.
Ah, the few happy family memories she had. But whatever. She wasn't going to think about it. Not today. No, today was a day about her and her best friend. Because, yes. Nathaniel was her best friend. A best friend that was a miracle worker- or something close. She hadn't smiled in ages, but now... now she was smiling more than she had in a long time. This was good. She was more of herself today than she had been in a long time. If all her friends were to see her like this, then she would be set. They wouldn't think she was depressed anymore. They would see her as the old Harper. The one who was always happy. She looked at Nathaniel and smiled back. His smile was so contagious. She nodded. "Good. Cuz I need my best friend." She said, the smile still touching her lips.
"Har har. You're so funny." Harper said, sticking her tongue out again. That was the last thing she go in before the giggles took over what she was saying. She was making incoherant sentances made of "I, you, stop, big trouble, and not my friend anymore", infused with giggles and squeeks. She was going to kill him later. She sounded like... like a girl! This wasn't good at all! Anyone that knew her knew she hated looking and sounding like a girl. So this was torture in its worst form. She wanted to kick him, but that wouldn't be nice at all. He'd get it later anyways.
Harper wasn't expecting what happened next. The tickling abruptly stopped, and all of a sudden, she felt Nathaniel's breath on her neck. It sent a shiver down her spine, and her breath caught in her throat. Those thoughts from before were multiplied and intensified. This was bad. She wanted him to kiss her right there and be done with it. She swallowed, trying to clear her head at the same time. And then he was gone. Harper caught her breath again, but looked up at the ceiling. What the hell? Why was she feeling a tight knot grow in her stomach? And why did she feel wrong all of a sudden? She closed her eyes and felt her hands ball into fists for a moment. This was insanity! She was just going to have to do it herself! UGH!
"Um." Was all that would come out. She looked at Nathaniel's outstretched hand and took it. She sat up slowly with his help and sighed. "Okay. Don't hate me for asking this, cuz I don't even know why I'm asking at all. I mean, like, this is totally insane." She said, shaking her head slightly. She closed her eyes for a moment and took a deep breath. "Um... what would you do if I, like, told you that the whole time you, um, fell on me, I was thinking about um..." Come on, Harper. Say it. She thought to herself. "I was thinking that I sort of liked you? That I always sort of have, but, like, I knew I couldn't even hold a candle to the girls you dated? What, um, what would you say?" She asked, twisting the ring her father bought Penelope around on her finger.
